Ryan Rising of Rising Roots Design will be facilitating a workshop, storytelling, and dialogue at Symbiosis Gathering 2013 (www.SymbiosisGathering.com) of Transforming Spaces: implementing permaculture through direct action. Symbiosis Gathering takes place September 19th through 23d in Oakdale, CA and will be hosting a permaculture intensive, Elementary Alchemy, before the gathering September 14th through 18th.
Transforming Spaces workshop
This workshop will explore how we can act directly to change the world
in which we live and transition our created environments, urban and
otherwise, to be in greater balance with the earth's natural ecosystems.
We will start with a story telling of direct actions over the past two
years that have gone outside the realm of what is necessarily legal to
create permaculture in the world around us; transitioning from systems
based on resource importation and relationships of domination and
capital to systems that embody symbiosis, mutual aid, and horizontal
structures. From liberating busy city streets to allow the human
movement of dance, to emancipating the earth below our feet for growing
food, this conversation will explore the many ways in which we can
create environments that foster community, ecology, and vitality.
Come
hear stories from the occupy farm, renegade festivals, the struggle to
save neighborhood gardens, and politically-active tent cities, and share
some of your own. We will talk about future plans for a regional
Village Building Convergence and the creation of greenhouses, plant
nurseries, urban farms, and accessible kitchens in each and every square
mile of the places we inhabit. Join in a dialogue around how each of
us can create permaculture where you live, whether by creating a
guerrilla garden in an abandoned lot near your home, or facilitating a
skills and assets mapping of your whole town to connect people in a gift
economy of food, medicine, and other needs and services. What can you
think of outside the bounds of the current paradigms of hierarchy and
capital? What is it you want to create? Come learn how to imagine,
organize, and act together!

Rising Roots participates in 1 Billion Rising: Dance Through the Streets for a Culture of Consent
We will gather at Dolores Park between 11am and 1pm to listen to live bands and DJs, share food, and make signs. At 1pm we will dance our way through the Mission calling on people to leave work and school in a global strike against rape culture. When we reach 16th and Mission we will cover the ground with art and inspirational messages and dance in the streets. We will then continue to Civic Center/City Hall where we will join the flashmob and other festivities.
We are coming together for a healing process and creating space that fosters both joy and sadness, love and anger, art and action. We will be calling for people to leave their schools and workplaces as we pass by buildings in San Francisco and join this global strike against rape culture. We stand for a culture of consent.

Harvesting Roots and Rooftop Terracing
These roots were harvested from the Permaculture Army house garden in Berkeley November 11, 2012. Roots can be a bountiful harvest well into the fall with medicinal and nutritive properties.
Burdock Root, or Arctium, has a taproot that is eaten as a vegetable. The immature flower stalks can also be eaten and are harvested in late spring before flowers appear. Burdock is considered medicinally as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood purifying agent.
Jerusalem Artichoke, knows as Helianthus Tuberosus, is a sunflower species known for its perennial edible root tuber. Roots can be eaten raw, cooked, or made into pasta. The plant is a prolific grower and will spread from where it is planted.
Oca, or Oxalis Tuberosa, is a perennial with edible tubers. The roots are crisp when raw or starchy when cooked.
All these roots can be harvested in mid-late fall and the Jerusalem Artichoke can be transplanted to new gardens by breaking off and planting a piece of the root beneath the soil.
One root node was brought to the rooftop gardens at Make Harmony Kitchen and Community Center in the Bayview/Hunter's Point district where it was planted with kale starts from the Gill Tract Farm. The community center is working with others to host a meeting about food justice within the neighborhood Tuesday, November 13th at Boudreaux's Cafe on 3d Street between Revere and Quesada. The working group plans to bring together projects already happening in the district to increase food sovereignty and community resiliency and start some new initiatives toward greater self-sufficiency and community interdependence.

A quick way to terrace a sloped roof with repurposed wood, and even the old nails!
Rising Roots and Space Transformers built these terracing platforms on a sloped concrete roof at Make Harmony Kitchen. The terracing allows for greater even growing surface and the sloped roof drains to a gutter that can be intercepted with water collection barrels to reuse water draining from the planters and to catch rain water that falls on the roof. A cob oven is also in the design phase and will function as a wood-fired oven for baking breads outside of the kitchen. Cobb is a mixture of sand, clay, straw, and water that is like adobe, resistant to fire, and a great conductor of heat.
